Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes is working on a new social network project called Jumo. The intent is to connect people to non-profits in a way that’s convenient and timely to us everyday types who might not have the opportunity to keep up with what’s going on with our favorite causes—or maybe, haven’t even decided what causes we would like to support.

Waiting until a disaster strikes to decide which organization(s) to support can lead to confusion—and honestly, may result in you giving to an organization whose mission or capability isn’t what you thought. But how do you choose when everyone’s shouting ‘Emergency’? There are over 1.4 million registered non-profits in the U.S. alone, according to Hughes. It would be sad to have just the loudest and those with the biggest, blinking, donate button get all the funding.

Right now, getting to know the non-profits out there can take some serious research time. What causes do we want to support? Who works in that area? What’s their particular mission? Where do they currently have projects? Do they provide data and stats to determine how successful their programs have been? I like to know where my money is going.

Side note: when a disaster hits, such as in Haiti, I like to donate to non-profits that already have a presence in the country. Why? Because they typically already have a base of operations, staff who are knowledgeable about the area and culture, and an established network of people and businesses that may enable them to better handle supply and logistical needs.
